Ryan Hayes Writing Minor
This piece was written at the begining of my Writing 220 class, the gateway course of the Minor in Writing program at the Unviersity of Michigan. I was charged to express why I choose to write. I write because I want to establish a shared understanding between writer and reader, although it is hard, if not impossible to achieve. It is a blissful lie that drives me to keep trying to reach an equilibrium of empathy, to keep writing.

I chose to reference the imagery of the greek myth of Tantalus to establish a visual metaphor for my writing process. While the story is of a tortured man who eternally tries to relieve his thirst and hunger, my struggle to achieve perfection in my writing is not a punishment.
