Discovery

Empathy has driven me to approach life through an inquisitive lens. In many ways, I am an explorer of perspective, as I try to think about the world around me in unique ways to gain greater understanding.

In my creative writing course, I was called to imagine a fictional character at a birthday party.  While the majority of my classmates wrote stanzas of Tigger or Superman eating birthday cake with their friends, I imagined a less exciting party behind the eyes of a Teletubby.  I imagined a hypothetical world where Tinky Winky, the purple character, was very much real.  After his show going off the air, the TV in his stomach became a wide screen as he gained weight, and the only job he could find was to be living room entertainment for a middle class family.  It's ridiculous, I know, but the process of imagining and analyzing the perspective of a fictional character lead to greater conclusions about real issues that people face.

In my Minor in Writing class, I was charged to repurpose and remediate this idea.  Charged with my empathetic purpose, the results were exciting.
